Two Majors: Computer Science and Hotel Management, by Jina

I was studying computer science at my university in Korea, but I think I do not have an aptitude for computer science because when I did project using a computer programming language, it was very difficult and I could not do it well. Therefore, I want to change my major to hotel management, which was my dream when I was a high school student. After considering the salary, job availability, and education requirements needed for computer science and hotel management, I decided that hotel management is the best career for me.

Considering the salary is the first way I chose my major. Both computer science and hotel management have a small starting salary, but as my career continues, my salary can increase. If I go on studying computer science, I will graduate from the university and then I will get a job. However, if I change my major to hotel management, I will study in a postgraduate course. For this reason, studying hotel management will result in a higher salary than studying computer science.

Job availability was the second consideration for choosing my major. I read a book about promising jobs before I came to the U.S.A. They included computer related careers, such as computer programmer, game designer, etc. and service careers such as tourism, travel agent, and interpreter. In Korea, international technology industries were highlighted above all other jobs. Therefore, if I study computer science, I will be employed easily. Also in Korea, hotel management is more competitive than computer science when a student is preparing to enter university. In view of these, many students want to study hotel management and get a job.

Considering the education requirement was the last step in choosing a major. Both careers require good English abilities. In addition, computer science students have to study the computer programming languages C++, Java, and JSP. Hotel management needs not only English, but also another language, such as Japanese, Chinese, or French. I want to learn another human language, not a computer programming language.

Both computer science and hotel management are fields of interest. However, when I studied computer science at the university, I thought occasionally, “Can I become a computer programmer?” Studying hotel management was my hope from when I was high school student. I considered the salary, job availability, and education requirements. Therefore, I think studying hotel management is better for me than studying computer science. When I go back to Korea, I will change my major to hotel management. I will be happier when I study hotel management.
